One of Adam’s childhood friends started dating a girl from my hometown.
We saw them more than ever the month before Adam died. It
was like God gave us a few more memories to cling to in Adam’s sudden absence.
These sweet friends used a family event to raise money
for us. We had no idea and were floored by the generosity of so many. It
was overwhelmingly kind. I wanted to do something special with their gift.
I found a quiltmaker online. Nancy at Minnesota T-Shirt
Quilts makes stunning memorial quilts and Adam had a ridiculous amount of
clothes. If he liked a T-shirt, he bought one in every color and he was highly
particular about fabrics.
Our days in the MN Army National Guard gave us lots of uniforms. We started in woodland camo, then got desert camo for Iraq, and received new digitized camo when we came back home. Add Adam’s police uniforms and his zillions of t-shirts and sweatshirts and we had plenty of material for quilts.
It was easier picking through Adam's closet knowing these items would be made into something our kids could wrap up in.
We made four piles in the living room that started off with 5 different uniforms each. Then I laid out their dad’s clothes and the kids came through in rounds and picked their favorites to add to their stack.
Nancy is easy to work with and her quilts are beautifully detailed. I gave them to the kids on Adam’s birthday last year. We each have one on our bed so we can see and feel a bit of Adam every morning and at bedtime when he is sorely missed. We loved these special quilts the minute we unwrapped them.
Memorial quilts are a beautiful way to cherish a loved
one and see pieces of their life every day.
