The Whiskey Widow, November 30 2023

Thanksgiving 2023.

I’ve talked before about changing up traditions.

It’s hard to try to keep doing things the way we did before.

It’s hard to make new traditions and not feel like you’re failing by letting some go.

Here’s what I can say about Thanksgiving 2023.

We made a ton of lefse at our house like we always do.

Hosted a big party, rolled through 20 pounds of potatoes, and loved seeing all the cousins, friends and neighbors who stop by on “Lefse Wednesday.”

We spent Thanksgiving Day with my family like we always do.

My son helped me make the green bean casserole and it warmed my heart. I was grateful.

We had some hockey thrown in but had to miss 6 games over a holiday weekend just to see Adam’s family. We never skipped Thanksgiving at his dad’s before and we won’t start now.

We have Italian Thanksgiving there the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The spaghetti sauce takes two days to make and the meatballs melt in your mouth. It is delicious.

I had these blue glen cairns made after Adam died and they line the table for Thanksgiving.

I’m sure not many families have a whiskey toast after a noon pasta meal the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but we do. The tears start streaming as plates begin to clear because I know what is coming next.

I love it and I hate it at the same time.
